We have no intention of interfering with, influencing or insulting the justice system; nor do we intend to contribute to amplifying the controversy surrounding Onana’s character: we bear in mind that the judiciary system is independent in France.

We would simply like to express our deep concern at the triumphalism and hubbub surrounding the opening, in October 2024, of trials against Dr Eugène Rwamucyo, Dr Charles Onana and Philippe Manier, all linked to events in Rwanda in 1994. Is this sudden judicial hyperactivity about Rwanda aimed solely at the ideal of justice, or does it conceal hidden agendas? How can we fail to wonder, in particular, about this judicial relentlessness against Dr Charles Onana, essayist, political scientist and investigative journalist of Cameroonian origin?

Indeed, for more than a quarter of a century, Dr. Onana has continued, with his pen and his voice, to denounce attacks on humanity and the right to peace for the peoples of the Great Lakes region in Africa in general and to advocate for Congolese people in particular.  Dr Onana was particularly distinguished by his empathy towards the people of the Great Lakes region who are prey to unjust, devastating and atrocious wars with the ulterior motive of the plundering of the natural wealth of the DR Congo.  He also stood out, incontestably, for his scientific rigor, notably thanks to his methodology, both through the plausibility of his hypotheses and his theses and through the cutting and relentless analysis of the facts.  Through his works, his conferences and his interviews, Mr. Onana has always amazed and surprised by his consistency and relevance.

all in all, Mr. Onana’s tragedy is to have dared to put his pen to the wound, so sensitive are the issues he has addressed. His tragedy, moreover, is to proclaim loud and clear a version of events that runs counter to the “official truth” hammered out tirelessly by Rwandan dictator Paul Kagame and his lobbies. Whether it’s about the terrorist attack of April 06, 1994 which claimed the lives of the two Rwandan and Burundian Heads of State, whether it’s about the reality of the genocide provoked by the aforementioned terrorist attack, whether it’s about Opération Turquoise which led the French army to go and save lives in Rwanda, whether it’s about the failings of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, etc., Mr. Charles Onana has never advanced anything without proving it.

How can we accuse Mr. Onana of genocide denial when, in 2002, he and Deo Mushayidi, a survivor of the said genocide, signed “Les secrets du génocide rwandais” (The secrets of the Rwandan genocide), a work in which the two authors bow to the victims and establish the chain of responsibility in the said genocide? Why all this persecution of Mr. Onana, a worthy son of Africa, given that his premises, analyses and conclusions are shared by various other specialists and leading voices on the Rwandan tragedy, including Filip Reyntjens, Michela Wrong, Judi Rever, Patrick Mbeko, Pierre Péan, Johan Swinnen, Colonel Luc Marchal etc.?

This is why we, the Rwandan Movement for the Republic and Democracy, call on friends of peace and defenders of humanity across the world to closely follow the debates which begin on October 7, 2024 at the Paris Criminal Court in order to Let the law be said and Mr Charles Onana be cleared of all accusations. Let us stand up as one and demand a fair and just trial for Dr. Charles Onana.
