Launching MRD Movement
"Now is our 1959 Moment"

Background History

RWANDA REVOLUTION: In 1959, the Rwanda Revolution took place. The country transitioned from a Tutsi monarchy, under Belgian-colonial rule, to an independent Hutu-dominated Republic. THE REFERENDUM: On September 25, 1961, a referendum on the monarchy was held. 80% of voters voted to end the monarchy and the king rule. Rwanda became an autonomous Republic. INDEPENDENCE: On July 1, 1962, Rwanda gained independence from Belgian rule, received UN membership, and became a Republic. When the Kagame’s RPF regime took power on July 4, 1994, the democratic values that led our people (RUBANDA) through the Revolution of 1959 & Independence of 1962 were abolished. Slowly, Kagame reinstated the return of the feudal-monarchical regime. Arbitrary arrests, kidnappings, torture, killings and unbelievable human rights abuses began.

This is our 1959 Moment

MRD movement is an indispensable engine of change and revolution in Rwandan politics which ‘Rubanda’ (We the People) are setting in motion to restore democracy, freedom and equality of all Rwandans before the law, while respecting and protecting the rights of those with a different ideology, regardless of ethnicity, geographical origin or religion.

“When injustice becomes a law, rebellion becomes a duty” ~ Thomas Jefferson

Kagame has closed all political space and imprisoned all real former presidential contenders. RESISTING the Kagame regime is a must! MRD will carry out political activities, revolutionary actions and civil disobedience, using all means and methods recognized by international law. We will do everything in our power to help fellow Rwandans recover their rights, their dignity, and their physical and moral integrity. We are determined to defend human rights and to restore the legitimacy of national and international laws protecting all citizens. We will fight for those rights until victory is won!
