RWANDA REVOLUTION: In 1959, the Rwanda Revolution took place. The country transitioned from a Tutsi monarchy, under Belgian-colonial rule, to an independent Hutu-dominated Republic.
THE REFERENDUM: On September 25, 1961, a referendum on the monarchy was held. 80% of voters voted to end the monarchy and the king rule. Rwanda became an autonomous Republic.
INDEPENDENCE: On July 1, 1962, Rwanda gained independence from Belgian rule, received UN membership, and became a Republic.
When the Kagame’s RPF regime took power on July 4, 1994, the democratic values that led our people (RUBANDA) through the Revolution of 1959 & Independence of 1962 were abolished. Slowly, Kagame reinstated the return of the feudal-monarchical regime. Arbitrary arrests, kidnappings, torture, killings and unbelievable human rights abuses began.
